Tohoku Earthquake
Japan 2011
On the 11th
of March 2011, an earthquake with the magnitude of 8.9 which was later upgraded
to 9.0 on the Richter scale, struck off the coast of Honshu, Japan. The
epicentre was 370 kilometres North-East from Tokyo, the capital city of Japan.
The focus was only 30 kilometres below the surface which means the seismic
waves that radiate out still had a lot of energy when they reached Japan,
causing the large earthquake and tsunami that followed.
